Is a Maltese right for your home?
The Maltese is one of the oldest companion breeds and has never really been asked to do anything else. It is light enough to travel with, quiet enough for an apartment, and endlessly interested in whatever its person is doing.
A single white coat means very little shedding, which is why the breed is popular with families who react to dog hair. It also means the coat needs real maintenance - either daily brushing at full length, or a short puppy clip every six weeks.
Care essentials
- Wipe under the eyes daily with a damp cloth to keep tear staining off the white coat.
- Toy breeds skip meals and drop their blood sugar - feed three small meals a day until six months.
- Dental care from week one. Small mouths crowd, and tartar builds fast.
